Course Title – IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS

Course Description – This session will discuss construction details that can cause design professionals and contractors to be brought into construction litigation. The presenter will highlight building code requirements, industry standards and manufacturer instructions related to roofing, exterior walls, windows and other issues common to construction litigation. The session will include a series of case studies with a discussion of the consequences associated with a bad detail, and examples of better practice details and concepts to improve durability.

Course Objectives – 

• OBJECTIVE ONE – Identify the contractor instructions used to establish defects in construction litigation.
• OBJECTIVE TWO – Correctly interpret prescriptive and performance-based building code requirements and industry standards for alleged construction defects
• OBJECTIVE THREE – Evaluate details for clarity, constructability, as well as durability, and identify and know how to modify otherwise dysfunctional (aka bad) details.

Course Presenter – Derek Hodgin, PE, Owner: Positive Friction Consulting

Derek Hodgin, P.E., RBEC, CCCA, F-IIBEC is the owner of Positive Friction Consulting (PFC), which Hodgin created for the sole purpose of teaching about building better. Hodgin has served the industry for nearly 30 years as a forensic engineer and expert witness, but has recently retired from that role to share what he has learned through PFC. Over his career Hodgin became a licensed Professional Engineer in 23 states and earned credentials as a Registered Building Enclosure Consultant and Construction Contract Administrator, among many others. In 2020, Hodgin was inducted as a Fellow in IIBEC to honor his contributions to the industry, including numerous technical articles and presentations related to construction issues. Most recently, Hodgin published “More Than 100 Ways to Build Better-A Contractors Guide to Better Practices” ; to educate the industry on ways to better the built environment. Outside of work, Derek enjoys spending time with family, travelling, listening to all types of music and SCUBA diving on coral reefs while practicing his underwater photography skills.
