Course Title – High Museum Reroof

Course Description – This one hour presentation is a case study of the replacement of the Wieland Pavilion and Anne Cox Chambers Wings of the Robert W. Woodruff Arts Center, Inc.’s High Museum of Art in Atlanta Georgia. The presentation will provide a history of the building and a discussion of the each of the project steps from initial investigation though construction, from the perspective of the roof consultant. A discussion of how and why a consultant was used in the project, including relevant information on the scope of the project and the methodology used will be presented. Innovative or notable aspects of the project, including its uniqueness, state-of-the-art materials used, aesthetics, and functionality will be presented. We will discuss how the involvement of the consultant contributed to project success, as well as how the overall collaboration amongst all team members resulted in a meaningful, award-winning project.

  • OBJECTIVE 1 –Present a case study of a high-profile, high-risk roof replacement project with complex technical challenges.
  • OBJECTIVE 2 –Discuss the need for the project, and the investigation techniques and design decisions incorporated into the project to achieve the desired outcome.
  • OBJECTIVE 3 –Explore the process and delivery of the project from investigation and design through construction and occupancy.
  • OBJECTIVE 4 –Discuss how the various stakeholders managed the project and the overall project outcome.

Course Presenter – Bryce McQueen, AIA – President of Merik, Inc.

Bryce D. McQueen, AIA is a Registered Architect and the President of Merik, Inc., a building enclosure consulting firm located near Atlanta, Georgia. Bryce has over 15 years of experience in building enclosure consulting and commissioning; building enclosure field testing; roof, facade, and waterproofing condition assessments and investigations; and repair and rehabilitation design. He is a specialist in restoration of historic structures as well as building enclosure components in new construction. Bryce is the past President of the Georgia Chapter of IIBEC in 2023 and has been a Consultant member of IIBEC since 2017.
